It seems like every day, we hear something regarding greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect. However, many people are a bit confused when it comes to the greenhouse effect.
The simple fact is that without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be an uninhabitable ball of ice.
In its' simplest terms, the greenhouse effect occurs when the rays of the sun pass through the atmosphere, and when they are reflected back up by the ground and plantlife, they are prevented from escaping back into space by various gases and dust in the atmosphere. This is very similar to what happens in a greenhouse, where the light and heat from the sun shines through the glass of the greenhouse, but is prevented from leaving by the glass. If this didn't happen in our atmosphere, more of the heat would be reflected into space than the Earth receives.
One of the misunderstandings has to do with the greenhouse gases that are primarily responsible for trapping the heat of the sun to make our world livable. Contrary to what we might hear in the popular media, Carbon Dioxide is not one of the major greenhouse gases, water vapor is. In fact, even Methane is a more powerful greenhouse gas than is CO2, which is naturally produced in enormous amounts by the many volcanic eruptions that are occurring at any given moment. Naturally, these gases also have other very good uses. For instance, without carbon dioxide, plants would be unable to grow, and an increase in global carbon dioxide levels is generally followed by an increase in plant life. (This is part of the "carbon cycle" that also allows all life to exist on this planet.)
We owe our lives to the greenhouse effect, and this is something we should never lose sight of, or make slight of. It is one more of the fantastic wonders of nature.
